WHAT WE ARE DOING
WHY WE ARE DOING IT
Learning about different ways that people make sound and music, and then inventing your own novel instrument
To learn about sound, materials, and fabrication
Aprender sobre sonido, materiales y fabricación
In this design sprint, we're going to study sound and then invent our own instruments! What do you think of this invented instrument in the movie Horton Hears a Who?
INTRODUCTION
1
Now let's watch another incredible invented instrument, called Wintergaten. How do you think this instrument was thought of and designed? What do you think is different about designing an instrument for an animated film and designing one that works in real life?
You experience music and sounds in a lot of different ways and in a lot of different places. As a class, discuss:
1. Does someone in your life play an instrument? If so, what is it? What does it sound like?
2. How do you listen to music in your home? Records? Radio? From the phone?
3. What do you do when you listen to music?
4. Do you have a favorite band, musical artists, or song? If so, what is it?
5. If you could play any musical instrument, what would it be?
1. ¿Alguien en tu vida toca algún instrumento? Si es así, ¿cuál es? ¿Cómo suena?
2. ¿Cómo escuchas música en casa? ¿Discos? ¿Radio? ¿Desde el teléfono?
3. ¿Qué haces cuando escuchas música?
4. ¿Tienes alguna banda, artista o canción favorita? Si es así, ¿cuál es?
5. Si pudieras tocar cualquier instrumento musical, ¿cuál sería?
EXPLORATION
2
Your teacher will show you a few different musical instruments that are visiting the classroom. Either as a class or in rotating stations, try out the individual instruments. For each one, answer the following questions:
- How does the user play the instrument? What part of their body do they use?
- How would you describe the sound that the instrument makes?
PRECEDENTS
3
As a class, look through the precedent library in the Toolbox tab. As you look at each precedent together, consider the same questions that you answered for the instrument exploration:
- How does the user play the instrument? What part of their body do they use?
- How would you describe the sound that the instrument makes?
BRAINSTORM
4
Now you'll come up with ideas for your own invented instrument!
- Individually, sketch at least 3 ideas for instruments that don't exist yet. Think about what kind of sound you want the instrument to make, and how the instrument will be played.
- Class share-out: your teacher will collect your ideas on the whiteboard, looking for connections or similar ideas.
- At the end of the brainstorm, you will be put in groups that you will collaborate in for the prototyping phase of the project.
PROTOTYPE
5
Let's build! You're going to build a prototype of your instrument using recyclables and the other materials in your classroom. As you build, consider what kind of sounds the different materials could make.
ACTIVITY MATERIALS
GET FEEDBACK
6
Share your prototype with your teacher and at least one other group. Have them ask questions and give you ideas and suggestions. Take notes on what you hear.
ITERATE
7
Now that you've gotten some feedback, make some improvements? This might mean making some new parts, changing the materials, or refining the functionality in some way.
PRESENT
8
You will present your final prototype to the class. In your presentation you can describe:
- Any precedents you found inspiring
- What your first idea was and how it changed as you prototyped and got feedback
- How your final instrument design works and what it sounds like
PERFORM
9
As a class, try out the instruments you made together. Are there some that sound complimentary? Could you attempt to play a simple song as a group?
In this studio, you'll turn simple, everyday materials into a novel musical instrument. By looking at amazing examples of innovators who have created sound-making devices and studying existing instruments, you'll gather inspiration to create your own unique design!
